Teen driver killed, passenger hurt after car falls 25 feet into creek in Kansas City

An 18-year-old driver was killed and his 19-year-old passenger was injured when the car they were riding in left the road and fell 25 feet into a creek bed early Sunday in south Kansas City, according to police.

The crash was reported about 12:30 a.m. near Blue River and Martha Truman roads, just south of Minor Park, according to the Kansas City Police Department.

An 18-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, man was driving a Dodge Challenger south on Blue River Road when he apparently lost control, police said. The Dodge left the road, broke through a metal guardrail and crashed into a heavily wooded creek bed about 25 feet below.

The driver died at the scene. His passenger, a 19-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, woman, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

The crash marked Kansas City’s 52nd traffic death of the year. At this time last year, the city had counted 36 traffic deaths, police said.
