Weeks after crash that killed 6 in Lawrence, accident report offers few details

A Ford Fusion carrying six passengers crossed the center line of K-10 while traveling Westbound in Lawrence last month striking a GMC and causing both cars to catch fire killing all six people in the Ford, according to an accident report released Wednesday.

Few other details, including the names of the victims, were provided in the report, which was completed and released by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office two weeks after the crash.

In an emailed statement Wednesday morning the office’s spokeswoman asked reporters to “be aware that the information in this report is limited due to extensive damage from the crash and resulting fire.”

A GoFundMe page posted in the days following the June 18 crash identified the victims as a mother, her three children, her brother and a family friend.

Relatives said the victims were 29-year-old Anico Kirk, her three children 11-year-old Yamel, 9-year-old Umariell and 4-year-old Nay’Layah, Kirk’s brother Maurice Ross, 27, and family friend Felecia Harvey, 49, were killed, the Lawrence Journal World reported.

The family had been driving from Florida to Topeka to visit family and friends.

Around 6:40 p.m. the family crashed at mile marker 385 of U.S. Highway 40, just west of the interchange with U.S. 59, or Iowa Street, said Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Jenn Hethcoat in an email to The Star. U.S. 40 and K-10 run concurrently west of Iowa Street.
