Six killed, one injured in Lawrence after head-on crash engulfs two cars in flames
Six people are dead and one is injured after a head-on crash on Kansas Highway 10 in Lawrence engulfed a Ford Fusion in flames, killing all six occupants.
The crash occurred around 6:40 p.m. Thursday at mile marker 385 of U.S. Highway 40, just west of the interchange with U.S. 59, or Iowa Street, said Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Jenn Hethcoat in an email to The Star. U.S. 40 and K-10 run concurrently west of Iowa Street.
The Ford Fusion, which was driving westbound, collided head-on with a GMC that had been driving eastbound. Both cars were on fire, the email said.
All six people inside the Ford were killed and the car was completely burned, the email said.
The driver of the GMC was transported to a hospital with serious injuries, Hethcoat said. The car was partially burned.
Names of the victims and details regarding what led to the crash were not immediately available.
