Portion of Kansas City’s downtown loop to close for pavement repair project

A part of Kansas City’s downtown loop will close Friday night for a pavement project on Interstate 70 that is expected to last through the weekend, the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Kansas City District announced.

The closure, which affects the east side of the loop, begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday and will involve the eastbound I-70/southbound U.S. 71 lanes. The highway is expected to reopen by 6 a.m. Monday.

The closure will impact drivers using the detour in place for the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Lewis and Clark Bridge replacement project. Those who are traveling that route should head west on I-70 and then south on I-35 to Broadway/27th Street and then north on I-35 to westbound Intestate 670.

The closure will begin in the northeast corner of the downtown loop along eastbound I-70 and end approximately where I-670 merges into I-70. Drivers will need to find alternate routes.

The ramps that will be closed are:

Southbound Interstate 35/Interstate 29 to eastbound I-70.

Admiral Boulevard to eastbound I-70.

10th Street to eastbound I-70.

14th Street to eastbound I-70.

The work is part of a pavement rehabilitation project along I-70 in both directions from downtown Kansas City to the Benton Curve. The project is expected to be completed by mid-October.
