Crews rescue four people from submerged vehicle in KCK as metro area sees flash floods

Four people were rescued in Kansas City, Kansas, after a vehicle became submerged during a downpour that caused traffic problems and flash flooding across the metro area.

The occupants became trapped at about 2:15 p.m. Thursday at 31st Street and Southwest Boulevard, the Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department said on Twitter.

Water rescue crews pulled them from the vehicle, the fire department said.

No one was injured.

The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill said by 2 p.m., thunderstorms had brought three to four inches of rain and caused flash flooding.

The showers caused cars at several locations to become stuck in water, covered roads and forced manhole covers to come off, the Kansas City Police Department said.

Major flooding was reported in Westport.

Heavy rains Thursday caused areas of flash flooding throughout the Kansas City metro area. These cars were swept away on the southeast side of Westport.

Westbound Interstate 70 at Main Street was closed until water went down, the Missouri Department of Transportation said shortly after 4 p.m.

Police and transportation officials urged drivers to avoid driving through flooded areas and to find alternate routes.
