Westport flooded as new warnings are issued for Kansas City area and downpour continues
A section of Westport was flooded Thursday as a downpour continued in Kansas City and new flash flood warnings were issued across the metropolitan area.
The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill issued one flash flood warning through 5 p.m. Thursday for Johnson and parts of Wyandotte counties in Kansas and parts of Cass, Clay, Platte and Jackson counties in Missouri.
An additional warning was issued for other Missouri counties farther east, including parts of Ray, Lafayette and Johnson counties. That warning is in effect until 6 p.m.
Doppler radar and automated gauges, the weather service said, indicated that thunderstorms continued to produce heavy rain across the area. By around 2 p.m., the weather service stated in its warning that 3 to 4 inches of rain had fallen, and flash flooding has been ongoing or is expected to begin.
Around the same time, Kansas City police were called to Westport Road and Mill Street where a car became stuck in the flooded intersection. No injuries were reported.
Others around the metro reported closures as the rain inundated some streets and highways. Law enforcement agencies and transportation officials were asking drivers to avoid driving through flooded roads and find alternate routes. Crews responded to many calls for rescues Thursday afternoon as vehicles were stranded in the high water.
Additional rainfall amounts of 2 to 3 inches are possible Thursday, the weather service warned.
