Fatal crash Monday on rain-soaked I-435 in Kansas City investigated by police

Police were investigating a fatal crash late Monday morning along a rain-soaked stretch of Interstate 435 on Kansas City’s southeast side.

Officers responded to the wreck just before 11 a.m. Police said a southbound Chevrolet Impala veered off the interstate, continued on a grassy area west of the roadway and crashed in a heavily wooded creek bed.

The male driver of the Impala was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Kansas City police.

The exact time the crash occurred remains under investigation. Workers from the Missouri Department of Transportation discovered the wreckage, and it appeared to have been there for some time.

The area where the Impala had stopped is low-lying and runs considerably below the grade of the roadway, which prevented other motorists from see it, police said.

The name of the driver has not been released.
