Shawnee Mission East cancels classes after crash downs power lines in Prairie Village

Shawnee Mission East canceled classes Monday after an early morning crash downed power lines near the Prairie Village high school.

The crash caused a power outage in the area and it was uncertain how soon power would be restored, a Shawnee Mission School District official said.

Prairie Village police announced shortly after 4:30 a.m. Monday that the intersection at 75th Street and Mission Road was closed because of the crash. About three hours later, police said the intersection would remain closed for several more hours while crews worked to repair the downed lines.

“Barricades will be placed closing the intersection, however, SM East students will be able to access both school and parking lots,” police said on Twitter. “Please continue to avoid the area.”

The school decided to cancel classes after utility crews couldn’t determine if power would be restored to the school by noon, a district official said. Buses were brought to the school at 9 a.m. to take students home.
