Woman found dead in fire at vacant home in Kansas City

A homeless woman was killed in a fire at a vacant home early Friday, the fire department said.

The blaze was reported in the 6800 block of East 12th Terrace.

When crews arrived, they encountered a “heavily involved home,” said Kansas City Fire Department Deputy Chief Jimmy Walker.

A man out front said the house was vacant, but that he and his girlfriend had been squatting there and she was still inside.

“Unfortunately due to fire conditions and structural collapse, we were unable to make entry to save the female victim,” Walker said.

The blaze extended to a house next door. The family was evacuated and that fire was contained.

Walker said the homeless man left the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, as does the woman’s identity.
