Kansas City metro adds nearly 300 new COVID-19 cases, but no new deaths on Monday
The Kansas City metropolitan area added nearly 300 new COVID-19 cases, but no deaths were reported Monday.
The area encompassing Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas gained 299 new cases for a total of 30,741 to date.
The two week positive test rate was 12.4% in Kansas City, 14.83% in Jackson County and 11.2% in Johnson County.
The positive test rate was 8.35% in Clay County, 9.08% in Platte County and 18.5% in Wyandotte County.
The seven-day rolling average for new cases in the metro area is 359. One week ago, it was 348. Two weeks ago, it was 398. August began with an average of 474.
The University of Kansas Health System reported 36 patients hospitalized for the coronavirus, up nine from Friday. Nine patients are in the intensive care unit, up five from Friday.
Steve Stites, chief medical officer at the health system, said the number of admissions over the weekend was high.
“That rise makes you a little nervous because we know that schools and colleges have reopened,” he said.
The hospital’s death rate is about 9%.
“It’s been that way for a number of months,” Stites said, noting the use of “core treatments” such as remdesivir and convalescent plasma.
No new deaths were reported Monday in the metro. The metro has recorded a total of 400 COVID-19 deaths.
On Monday, Missouri reported 84,697 cases to date, including 1,530 deaths. The seven day positive test rate was 12.6%. The overall rate was 8.5%.
Kansas has confirmed 42,612 cases, including 446 deaths. The overall positive test rate was 10.3%.
Across the U.S., more than 6 million people have contracted the virus and 183,312 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University.
