Kansas City metro reports an additional 270 coronavirus cases, no new deaths Sunday

Health officials in the Kansas City metro region on Sunday reported an additional 270 coronavirus infections and no new deaths.

With the added cases, the virus has now infected 30,442 metro residents to date, including 400 who have died.

By this time last week, the metro — which includes Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas — had reported 27,995 cases and 384 deaths, according to data maintained by The Star.

As of Sunday, Johnson County outpaced other regions in the metro in the number of virus-related deaths, with 116. To date, 8,050 residents there have tested positive.

Wyandotte County has recorded the second-highest number of virus-related deaths at 113. To date, there have been 5,906 cases there.

Kansas City continued to report the highest number of infections at 9,183 to date. Sixty-nine residents have died.

In Jackson County, 5,462 residents have tested positive for the virus, including 61 who have died.

Clay County has reported 1,363 infections, including 31 deaths. In Platte County, 478 residents have tested positive for the virus, including 10 who have died.

Throughout Missouri, 83,655 residents have been infected, including 1,508 who have died, according to the state Department of Health and Senior Services. The state reported its largest number of COVID-19 deaths in a single day Saturday, with 32 in 24 hours.

The state’s overall positive test rate was about 8.5%.

As of Friday, the last time it updated its data, Kansas reported at least 41,048 infections, including 443 deaths.

The overall positive test rate was 10.2%. Earlier this week, Kansas’ top health official, Dr. Lee Norman, said the state’s positive test rate at the time of 10.3% was the 6th highest in the U.S.

Nationwide, the virus has infected more than 5.9 million Americans, killing 182,789, according to Johns Hopkins University.
