COVID-19 cancels Big Slick in Kansas City this weekend. But there’s an online version
This was supposed to be the time that Big Slick Celebrity Weekend returned to Kansas City.
There was supposed to be a celebrity softball game at Kauffman Stadium Friday night before the Royals were supposed to play the Cleveland Indians. On Saturday, the celebrities were supposed to walk a red carpet and into Pinstripes in Overland Park for a bowling tournament. And that night they were supposed to draw thousands of fans to the Sprint Center to cap it off with an auction and party, all to raise money for the Cancer Center at Children’s Mercy.
COVID-19 wiped out those plans.
But “pediatric cancer doesn’t take a year off,” the organizers said in a statement. So they’ve launched Big Slick at Home, an online fundraiser that runs through June 14 at bigslickkc.org.
Every night at 7 p.m., one of the hometown hosts — Rob Riggle, Paul Rudd, Jason Sudeikis, Eric Stonestreet and David Koechner — will introduce a video of their favorite Big Slick memories over the past 10 years, via YouTube Live and Facebook Live.
During the fundraiser, a donor will match every dollar raised (up to $1 million). Donate at least $50 and get a Big Slick at Home T-shirt.
The event culminates at 7 p.m. June 14 with an announcement of the amount raised.
In its 10 years, Big Slick has donated more than $10 million to Children’s Mercy.
