Coronavirus death toll rises to 89 in KC metro as more reported in Kansas counties

Health officials in Wyandotte and Johnson counties reported more deaths tied to the new coronavirus Sunday, bringing the number of fatal infections across the Kansas City metropolitan area to 89.

That’s an increase of 50 deaths across the region in 10 days, according to data kept by The Star.

Five more deaths were reported Sunday in Johnson County, where there have been 367 cases and 30 deaths. Two more deaths were reported in Wyandotte County, which has seen 403 cases and 37 deaths.

Across the metro, health officials have recorded 1,540 cases. Kansas City reported 418 cases and 13 deaths, Jackson County recorded 268 and eight deaths, Clay County reported 57 cases and one death and Platte County has seen 27 cases.

Stay-at-home orders for Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties were extended to May 15. Kansas’ order covering Johnson and Wyandotte counties expires May 3.

By the end of the weekend, Missouri reported 5,667 cases and 176 deaths. In Kansas, where fewer people have been tested, health officials reported 92 deaths and 1,849 cases.

The virus has infected more than 2,375,000 people across the world and at least 164,716 have died.

In the United States, there have been more than 742,000 cases and 40,585 deaths, according to a database maintained by Johns Hopkins University.
