Two more COVID-19 deaths in Wyandotte County, 1 more in Johnson County

Health officials in Wyandotte and Johnson counties reported additional deaths Wednesday related to the new coronavirus.

Wyandotte County health officials reported two new deaths related to COVID-19 early Wednesday morning, bringing their total to 12. Johnson County officials reported 11 total deaths after announcing one more victim since Tuesday.

Johnson County now reports 239 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 with an additional 1,878 tests coming back negative. Wyandotte County is reporting 219 cases; 72 of the individuals confirmed to have the virus are hospitalized.

Four of the deaths in Wyandotte County are from Riverbend Post Acute Rehabilitation at 7850 Freeman Avenue. As of Tuesday, there were 37 confirmed cases of COVID-19 linked to the rehabilitation health care facility, including four employees. The rest are residents, local health officials said Tuesday.

At least one coronavirus-related death in Kansas and more than a dozen other confirmed cases are tied to a church conference in Wyandotte County, health officials said.

As of Tuesday, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment had identified at least 15 cases associated with the Kansas East Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction’s Ministers and Workers Conference held March 16-22 at the Miracle Temple Church of God in Christ, 2106 Quindaro Blvd. Of the 15 cases, six are patients who have been hospitalized.

In Kansas, at least 27 of the 900 people who tested positive for the virus had died as of Tuesday afternoon, according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

In Missouri, officials reported 3,037 cases and 53 deaths across the state as of Tuesday afternoon. Missouri has reported about three times as many cases as Kansas, but has also tested more than three times as many people.

The total number of new coronavirus cases in the Kansas City metropolitan area exceeded 850 confirmed cases Tuesday afternoon; 29 of those infected have died, according to data compiled by the Star.

That count includes data from health officials in Kansas City as well as Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas and Missouri health officials.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Kansas City health officials reported 234 cases and seven deaths within the city limits.

Nationwide, there are nearly 400,000 cases and more than 12,900 deaths as of Wednesday morning, according to a database maintained by Johns Hopkins University. Worldwide, there were more than 1,447,400 cases and 83,400 deaths.
