St. Louis County first in MO to impose stay-at-home order to slow spread of COVID-19

St. Louis County and City will enact stay-at-home orders Saturday in an effort to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus.

St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson and County Executive Sam Page each posted statements on Twitter announcing the policy which will go into effect on Monday.

The orders will still allow residents to go to grocery stores and pharmacies and walk in public parks, the release said. However, people will be required to stay home “when possible.”

Details about the policies will be released later Saturday afternoon.

“I wish this wasn’t necessary, but it is,” Page said in a post on Twitter.

St. Louis City and County are the first jurisdictions to impose such measures in Missouri where 73 cases of COVID-19 have been reported.

As of Friday night six of those case had been reported in Saint Louis City and 12 were reported in Saint Louis County.

Three people in Missouri have died from the virus. St. Louis County officials announced Friday that a woman in her 60s with “multiple health complications” was the first fatality in that area.

Stay at home orders have been announced in cities and states across the country including Illinois and California.

Nearly 20,000 people in the United States have been infected with the rapidly spreading virus.
