Openings & Closings

Family-owned diner in the Kansas City area will close, citing rent spike

A popular family-owned diner in Wyandotte County will close this month.

Grill 32, 104 S. Fourth St., in Edwardsville, said in a Facebook post Thursday that a sudden rent increase was the cause for the closure.

“We are sad to inform that we have no choice but to permanently close down the Grill. Unfortunately, the landlord had his daughter deliver an updated ‘lease’ with a 70% increase on the rent,” the post said.

In the post, the restaurant said the lease included extra charges that would have amounted to a 30% increase as well and only 20 days’ notice to make a decision.

Grill 32 opened in 2022, making burgers, breakfast and sandwiches. It has 4.7 stars on Google and over 1,800 followers on social media. The restaurant’s last day is July 29.

“We want to thank the community for all of the support over the last 4 years! We love you all and will miss serving you! Please don’t feel bad for us, it’s been a great ride! We feel bad for the community and the workers in the area that we have fed all of these years,” the post said. “Thank you to our catering partners and every single person that has walked in our door! Thank you to our team and staff members and anyone that has ever helped us along the way!”

The restaurant had a brief moment of fame in 2023 for its New Heights sandwich, a tribute to Travis and Jason Kelce that combines a Philly cheesesteak with a barbecue sauce- and turkey-infused BLT.

Grill 32 is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
