Less than three years ago, revolving sushi restaurant Kura Sushi opened on Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza, eliciting long waits for its video game-style service.

Now Johnson County residents will get a taste.

Kura will soon open at 12025 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park, according to its website and permits filed to the city. The company is Japan’s second-largest revolving sushi chain. It has close to 100 locations in the U.S.

The restaurant did not respond to The Star’s requests for comment Wednesday to confirm its opening date.

The Overland Park space formerly occupied by burger joint Five Guys will soon be transformed into the world of Bikkura Pon. The game, built into iPads at each table, aligns with the plates floating by on the conveyor belt.

When customers see something they crave, they pop open the plastic pods and pull out the plate. As diners return each plate down a chute, they earn points. Prizes of varying sizes are delivered as they reach certain benchmarks.

Rolling robot waiters bring customers special items and drinks.

Kura sells ramen, udon, dozens of sushi options and other entrees. Its sushi rolls include spicy salmon crunchy roll, shrimp avocado roll, American wagyu roll, snow crab California hand roll and tempura Philadelphia roll.

Local concept Umami Revolving Sushi Bar, meanwhile, opened last year at 8180 W. 135th St.
