Former Johnson County craft store will soon become a family ‘action park’
From craft supplies to slides, an Overland Park storefront is taking on a new life as a family entertainment center.
The former Joann’s Fabrics at 11401 Metcalf Ave. will soon become Slick City Action Park, a slide-centric indoor entertainment center.
When the concept opens sometime in July, it will feature several styles of dry slides — such as the Mega Launch, Python and Royal Flush — as well as air courts designed for jumping and competitive play.
On Tuesday morning, Slick City spokesperson Hallie Long said she’s unsure when in July the concept will open, because some permits and inspections are still pending.
“Overland Park is a vibrant, growing community that values family, connection and shared experiences, making it a natural fit for Slick City,” Kevin Dugal, vice president of operations for Slick City Action Park, said in a press release. “We’re excited to open our first Kansas location and provide a destination where guests of all ages can stay active, celebrate special moments and create lasting memories together.”
Founded in 2021, Slick City is headquartered in St. Louis and Nashville. It opened its first location in Denver in 2022. Its Chesterfield, Missouri, (St. Louis area) location opened in late 2022.
Slick City has 150 locations open, signed or under construction, according to a media release.
Last year, craft retailer Joann’s closed all its stores across the country, including in the Kansas City metro.
At the time of the mass closure, Joann’s had five area locations: 2201 NW Barry Road, 11401 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park, 11215 W. 63rd St. in Shawnee, 3810 S. Crackerneck Road in Independence, and 1153 E. North Ave. in Belton.
