Chicken chain closes Johnson County spot of 40 years. Coffee drive-thru coming
National chicken chain KFC) has closed its decades-old location along busy Shawnee Mission Parkway — but something else is on its way.
Arkansas-based coffee chain 7 Brew is planning to convert the existing Kentucky Fried Chicken building at 11560 W. 63rd St. into a drive-thru, according to documents submitted to the city of Shawnee.
The company did not respond to The Star’s requests for comments Monday in time for publication.
The chicken chain served its final meal at the location a few weeks ago after more than 40 years in that building, city planning documents indicate. KFC neighbored fast food chicken giant Chick-Fil-A, which opened in fall 2024.
KFC still has a dozen locations in the metro, including ones at 9564 Quivira Road in Lenexa, 7100 W. 119th St., and 4401 Shawnee Drive in KCK.
7 Brew, meanwhile, has been expanding. The chain first entered the metro more than three years ago and now has 10 locations in the metro, with four of those in Johnson County.
Its locations in Johnson County are: 1101 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park, 2021 E. Santa Fe St. in Olathe, 8721 W. 135th St. in Overland Park and 15027 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park.
The coffee chain is also looking to open a location in Lee’s Summit at 498 Missouri Route 291. It’s taking over a former Fazoli’s, which closed in May 2025.
7 Brew got its start in 2017 and now has more than 700 locations in 38 states.
The coffee chain’s flavored lattes include banana bread, blondie, cinnamon roll and cookie butter. It also sells energy drinks, sodas, lemonades and more.
Its Shawnee location will be near a Dutch Bros at 11335 Shawnee Mission Parkway.
