Kansas City coffee shop will open new downtown spot. ‘Good opportunity’
Months after coffee shop Prefix closed its downtown spot in the Lightwell building, another concept will move in.
Grand Coffee Company will open its fourth location at 1100 Main St. Owner Salvatore Silvio told The Star he’s aiming to open the spot June 16.
The new location won’t deviate from Grand’s menu offered at its other locations, which includes a salted caramel latte, brown sugar shaken espresso, cherry limeade energy drink, and orange creamsicle refresher. It also serves smoothies and açai bowls.
The new spot will seat about 50 people.
“It’s a pretty condensed area,” Silvio said. “There’s a lot of walking traffic, so we thought it would be a good opportunity.”
Grand Coffee first opened its 2345 Grand Blvd. spot in 2023 (hence its name). It added its Shawnee location in 2024. It recently opened a spot in Platte City.
In March, Hemma Hemma Dinette, a diner-style version of Hemma Hemma in Waldo, also opened in the Lightwell building.
Prefix, meanwhile, closed its remaining locations in November. It previously rented a separate location from religious group International House of Prayer-Kansas City before suing them for causing “substantial financial harm.”
“Although there were many times when there seemed like hopeful opportunities for turning our business around and entering into genuine sustainability and growth, we have ultimately been brought to an abrupt and difficult conclusion that we could not continue any longer,” Prefix said in a statement.
