Local clothing brand to join KC’s Country Club Plaza, replace dog bakery

A local clothing brand will soon make its way to Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza, moving into a spot occupied by a longtime dog bakery.

KC area-based clothing company Mersea will open its first brick and mortar on the Plaza this summer, according to the shopping center.

It will move into 602 W. 48th St., home to Three Dog Bakery for 30 years. The dog brand will close this month.

Mersea was founded by Lina Dickinson and Melanie Bolin 13 years ago, and it has not had its own location until now. It’s been featured in Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and it landed a spot on Oprah Winfrey’s “Favorite Things” gift guide in 2023.

The Plaza space will be a pop-up — meaning it’s here for a limited time — though the shopping center did not specify how long it would be on the Plaza.

“Opening our first pop-up right here in Kansas City feels like the natural next step in our journey, and we’re so excited about it,” Melanie Bolin said in a release.

The Plaza was purchased by Gillon Property Group, formerly known as HP Village Partners, in 2024.

Since then, the Plaza has seen several tenants move out, while some have moved in. Though many of the major renovations promised in the group’s massive $1.4 billion renovation plan have yet to take place, improvements to lighting and security have begun.

“We’re so excited to welcome MERSEA to Country Club Plaza and celebrate the opening of their first store,” Chris Harren, vice president of development for Gillion Property Group, said in the release. “MERSEA reflects the local, lifestyle-focused brands our guests are eager to experience. We’re proud to support local, while continuing to bring exclusive brands to the Plaza.”

Alo Yoga will open in the former Kindred space, 422 Nichols Road, this spring.

Women’s clothing brand Johnny Was closed at 320 Nichols Road in January.
