After 30 years on Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza, Three Dog Bakery will close.

The pet store, 602 W. 48th St., had signs posted on its windows Tuesday announcing its closure.

“For 30 incredible years, we’ve had the distinct honor of being a part of your daily walks, your celebratory milestones, and the beautiful bond you share with your pets,” the signs read. “We will miss the pitter-patter of paws through our doors more than words can say.

“While we don’t have a home just yet, our commitment to Kansas City’s pets remains strong as ever. We hope this isn’t a final goodbye, but rather a ‘see you soon.’”

Employees told The Star its last day would be next Sunday or before then, depending on how quickly product sells out. The store is advertising 75% off nonpastry items.

The brand could not be immediately reached for further comment Tuesday.

It still has two locations: 7951 W. 160th St. in Overland Park and 910 NW Blue Parkway in Lee’s Summit

Three Dog Bakery was founded by Dan Dye and Mark Beckloff in 1989 in Kansas City. It’s widely considered one of the world’s first dog bakeries.

In 2014, the company was purchased by a private investment group. In 2023, the company sold its consumer products division, which sells products to major retailers like Walmart and Target, to a private equity firm based in New York.

Three Dog announced in 2024 that it would open a new flagship store downtown, in Kansas City’s Power & Light District.

The KC Live district sued Three Dog Bakery, after the location never opened, saying it failed to pay rent and provide key information prior to signing the lease.

Its Leawood location, 4322 W. 119th St., has closed and is now home to Brookside Barkery.
