Former Johnson County Macy’s will be home to indoor golf experience
A once-popular Johnson County Macy’s — now under redevelopment — will soon be home to a year-round golf facility.
GolfTRK is the latest tenant to join the building at 71st Street and Mission Road in Prairie Village. Months ago, developers with First Washington announced that Hen House grocery store and Iowa-based Big Grove Brewery would also open in the space.
The 6,700-square-foot golf facility will neighbor Big Grove, with both targeted to open before the World Cup.
It’s a “pinch me” moment for Alex Reed, who opened his first GolfTRK location in Lenexa three years ago. Now he’s looking at opening 20 to 25 by the end of the year in multiple states: Florida, South Carolina, Texas and beyond.
“To be at this stage of our journey and build something that is significant and leave our thumbprint on a development site like Macy’s … it’s just a big deal for us personally,” Reed said.
The Prairie Village location will become GolfTRK’s headquarters and flagship spot. It’s three to four times as big as its other locations, Reed said.
Reed designed GolfTRK after growing tired of the Midwest’s propensity to make golf courses unplayable during much of the winter. After building a golf simulator facility for himself, others began to request a chance to practice their swings.
The demand led to paid memberships and many more locations.
GolfTRK showcases technology from simulators Trackman and Puttview. When players hit the ball, the simulators give the hitter statistics on their swings.
Digital golf caddy Noonan tracks golfers’ scores across platforms and gives feedback.
Reed said he’s looking forward to moving into the space, which has been a high-interest area since it closed in 2020.
The space sat dormant the next few years until its groundbreaking last year.
