Popular KC bar will close a location after 38 years. But there’s good news
Tanner’s Bar & Grill — a sports bar chain with multiple locations across the metro — is closing a longtime Overland Park location.
The bar announced via social media that its spot at 10146 W. 119th St. in the Highland Plaza shopping center will close at the end of the month. The location has been open for 38 years.
“This place has been more than a bar — it’s been first jobs, post-game beers, family celebrations, heartbreaks, championships, and friendships that lasted decades,” the bar wrote on social media.
Thankfully, Tanner’s will open a new location nearby. Owner Matt Brentano told The Star that when they couldn’t come to terms with the new lease at the 119th Street location, they began looking elsewhere in the area.
The new Tanner’s will open at 12520 Quivira Road, in the former LaMar’s Donuts storefront.
“Sad to leave that spot, obviously, because so many great memories there, but very excited for the new location,” Brentano said. “I think it will be a great spot for us moving forward.”
Tanner’s in Kansas City and the Midwest
Tanner’s has more than a dozen locations in Kansas, Wisconsin and Nebraska, and it has seven in the metro.
Its spots nearby include 14337 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park and 13350 College Blvd. in Lenexa.
Tanner’s origins can be traced back to Atchison, Kansas, where founder “Grandpa” Tanner loved to quench the thirst of his friends. Its first official location opened in Lenexa in 1985.
Brentano and his business partner, Jim Fager, opened a slightly elevated version of Tanner’s in south Overland Park called Sammie’s Kitchen & Bar.
That restaurant, serving sandwiches, pizza, cocktails and more, is at 7721 W. 151st St.
