Openings & Closings

Asian restaurant that’s a Waldo favorite will close at the end of February

A local favorite in Waldo is scheduled to close. Again.

Boru Asian Eatery announced in an Instagram post Monday afternoon that their final day of service is Feb. 28. The restaurant —previously known as Boru Ramen Bar — previously announced a closure in 2020, blaming economic conditions from the pandemic.

It was meant to be permanent, but they reopened a few months later in response to immense public demand, this time with a new name, menu and interior design.

“We thought we were done. But then we got so much positive feedback: ‘Can you do a pop-up?’ and ‘We come every week for this.’ We just needed more of them,” Andy Lock with Summit Hospitality Group previously told The Star. “So the new menu is going to be a little more diverse, a little more approachable. I think we really have a chance to be successful.”

Boru Asian Eatery, 500 W. 75th St., is known for their ramen, it also serves sushi, steamed baos, as well as rice and noodle dishes.

The Summit Hospitality Group owns Boru along with Summit Grill, Third Street Social and other local concepts. It has been making some changes locally in the last year, including the May closure of South of Summit, another Waldo restaurant. The restaurant group is owned by Domhnall Molloy after the death of Lock, his business partner, last year.

“While this chapter comes to a close, our commitment to Kansas City remains strong,” Boru & the Summit Hospitality Group said in the Instagram post. “We look forward to reinvesting in the community through new openings, including Third Street Social in Olathe this spring and Vertice Italian on the Country Club Plaza later this year.”

An exact reason as to why the restaurant is closing was not released, but the post added that those who work at Boru will be welcomed into roles at their various sister restaurants.

“Boru has been shaped by this community, and your support over the years has meant everything to us,” they said in the post. Boru Asian Eatery is open Monday through Thursday from 3 to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 3 to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 3 to 10 p.m.
