Kansas City Mexican restaurant closing after 5 years. ‘Deeply grateful’
South of Summit, a Kansas City taqueria and tequila restaurant, is closing.
The Waldo restaurant, 516 W. 75th St., announced that its last day will be May 31.
“We are deeply grateful for the loyalty and support our guests have shown South of Summit,” ownership group Summit Hospitality Group said in a statement sent Friday. “Although it’s difficult to close this chapter, we’re eager to introduce a new concept that will continue our tradition of culinary excellence and community engagement.
The group did not provide more details on the future concept that will replace it.
South of Summit opened in 2020 and serves burritos, enchiladas, a variety of tacos and mezcal drinks.
Summit Hospitality Group owns several concepts: Summit Grill, Pearl Tavern, Bōru Asian Eatery and Third Street Social.
The closure comes less than two months after the death of Andy Lock, co-founder of Summit Hospitality Group and father of former Mizzou quarterback Drew Lock.
“His legacy lives on in every dish we serve, every warm welcome we offer, and every moment we share across our restaurants,” the group said at the time.
