As part of a new shopping center, a planned Olathe Hen House grocery store is moving forward.

Plans for the 16-acre Cedar Creek Marketplace off K-10 and Cedar Creek Parkway passed at last Tuesday’s Olathe City Council meeting.

The online agenda named Hen House specifically as a prospective tenant. The shopping center will feature the 50,000-square-foot grocery store, plus an additional 30,600 square feet of additional retail space.

Any additional plans must first be approved by the planning commission and city council.

David Ball, owner of Balls Food Stores, is the owner of the property. In 2017, Ball first teased the project in The Star, saying a Hen House would be part of the development.

“The success of the Balls Company depends upon satisfying the needs of our teammates, customers and the communities of which we are a part,” he said.

The Cedar Creek project includes brew pub Tall Trellis Brew Co., which opened in 2022.

A new Hen House is also in the works for the former Macy’s site in Prairie Village at 7070 Mission Road. It’s a relocation of an aging location nearby at 6950 Mission Road, which is still open during construction.
