Popular KC-area pie seller (and Andy Reid favorite) is opening a brick and mortar
Curt Lafferty knows pie.
He spent two decades as an executive for Tippin’s Pies — a beloved Kansas City brand that’s been around since 1980.
But since 2020, he’s been selling his own recipes wholesale and at farmers markets through his business, MO Pie. Since then, customers have been “begging” Lafferty to open a brick and mortar.
Good news: Lafferty aims to please.
MO Pie is opening a spot at 7956 Lee Blvd. in Leawood. Lafferty is testing the spot as a pop-up for the holiday season, but he plans to open a permanent spot there in August 2026 if all goes well.
And he doesn’t want to stop there. Lafferty aims to ultimately open about four brick-and-mortar spots around the metro — likely around Olathe, Lee’s Summit and Parkville.
“The consumers have really drawn themselves to us and like us and are looking for a location … that we can put on an everyday basis,” he said.
Currently, MO Pie is sold in about 300 grocery stores across the country, offering key lime pies, turtle pies, french silk, lemon blueberry, bourbon chocolate pecan and several other rotating flavors.
MO Pie has a famous fan, too: Chiefs coach Andy Reid. Reid is specifically a lover of its caramel apple flavor, Lafferty said, adding that the Reids reach out a few times a year to order their pies.
In honor of Reid, Lafferty partnered with The Golden Scoop to create a caramel apple pie ice cream called “How ‘Bout That Ice Cream?” It’s sold at the ice cream shop’s two Overland Park locations.
“Andy Reid has been supportive of us in allowing us to use his image on our caramel apple pie,” he said.
The start of MO Pie
Lafferty said he decided to start MO Pie five years ago after feeling like his former employer had strayed too far from its original methods.
But it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. Lafferty said he lost his lease in a former commissary kitchen, and the incident almost caused the business to go belly up.
But his loyal customer base has helped the business stay afloat and grow enough to the point of expansion, he said.
“We’ve struggled a great deal to get this going and risked everything on it,” he said. “It’s rewarding to see the consumers coming back and looking for you … We’re getting such a loyal following.”
Thanksgiving pies will be available to pick up at the new Leawood location from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Nov. 24 to 26.
