Popular local doughnut shop opening new Johnson County spot, with drive-thru
Their doughnuts have been ranked among the best in the United States. Now, beloved Kansas City area doughnut brand Mr. D’s Donuts is opening a new location.
The newly built store, complete with a drive-thru, will open at 143rd Street and Metcalf Avenue in the Lionsgate Shopping Center. It expects to break ground this fall and finish construction late summer or early fall of next year.
Husband and wife Johnny Chen and Boggie Otgonbayar have owned Mr. D’s for about seven years, though the brand has a 50-year history in the .
The original Mr. D’s location opened in 1975 and is still operating at 11222 W 75th St. in Shawnee. They also have a stand inside the Lenexa Public Market at Lenexa’s City Center and another location inside the new AdventHealth Hospital nearby.
“We survived the pandemic, and now we have two more locations,” he said. “We’re growing, and we’ll be continuing to grow.”
The 2,000 square foot shop will hold roughly 80 to 90 people. In addition to its longtime favorites (apple cider, blueberry old-fashioned and honey-dipped doughnuts), Mr. D’s plans to expand its menu.
The exact menu additions have yet to be determined, but Chen said he’s hoping to carry more around-the-clock food options.
“Something easy, nothing too heavy,” he said. “Quick and homey type of food.”
The new location will likely be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Chen said he would like to offer more coffee and breakfast options to an area where there aren’t as many choices.
“Around that area, there’s not a whole lot of cafes ... especially drive-thrus,” he said. “We’re gonna bring that convenience factor to the community.”
Mr. D’s has become even more well-known in recent years thanks to special promotions and collaborations with other beloved local businesses. The shop’s Chiefs-themed doughnuts are regularly a favorite with customers. Last weekend, Mr D.’s collaborated with Italian restaurant Jaspers to create a limited edition Maritozzo doughnut: a sweet bun filled with whipped cream and rainbow sprinkles.
After the new spot opens, what’s next for Mr. D’s?
“To be continued,” Chen said.
