Popular taco chain closing two KC spots, leaving one left. ‘Never easy’
Bad news for queso fans: Torchy’s Tacos is closing two of its three Kansas City locations.
The Texas-based taco chain is closing its spots at 8815 State Line Road in Ward Parkway Center and 6815 W. 135th St. in Overland Park’s Corbin Park shopping center.
Both spots are shutting down Tuesday, according to a spokeswoman for Torchy’s.
The Olathe location, 11919 S. Strang Line Road, will remain open.
“Closing restaurants is never easy, especially in communities that’ve shown us so much love,” CEO Paul Macaluso said in a statement. “This decision reflects a broader shift in how we grow and where we can make the biggest long-term impact.
“These restaurants will always be part of our story. We hope to return in the future when the time and place are right.”
A spokeswoman with the company said Torchy’s is closing five other locations in the country. All its locations are corporate-owned, not franchises.
Torchy’s boasts on its website of more than 130 locations.
The company began in Austin circa 2006 and serves tacos, burritos, bowls and more.
Some tacos on its menu: the Hogfather (green chile pork carnitas, teriyaki sauce, bacon, onions, grilled corn relish, cotija cheese, cilantro on a flour tortilla with a side of Diablo Sauce) and the Baja Shrimp (shrimp, cabbage slaw, pickled onions, jalapeños, cotija cheese and cilantro on a corn tortilla, served with a lime wedge).
Torchy’s entered the KC market in 2020, with its Ward Parkway location.
Meanwhile, local chain Tiki Taco is expanding, with its fifth location set to open in downtown Shawnee.
