Confirmed: Texas steakhouse chain plans to open near Johnson County Hereford House
Houston-based Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille is coming to Leawood’s Town Center Plaza.
An unnamed restaurant has been going through the Leawood Planning Commission for months, but there was no official confirmation on the company. But plans for the 12,681-square-foot building, in the center’s north parking lot, were approved Monday.
Perry officials confirmed their plans Thursday morning. The site is near longtime tenant Hereford House, and an early 2024 opening is scheduled.
“Our team is so excited for the opportunity to introduce Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille to Kansas City, known for its love of great steaks and great steakhouses,” Chris Perry, founder and owner of Perry’s Restaurants, said in a statement. “As we look forward to unveiling our approach — wrapped in a beautiful restaurant design and an award-winning menu — we can’t wait to call Kansas City home and welcome our new guests.”
Officials with the locally owned Hereford House previously expressed concerns about the proposed restaurant building, saying the plan would “eliminate a significant portion of its parking. Its site is under different owners than the shopping center.
On Thursday morning it issued this statement: “While not the outcome we hoped for, Hereford House is proud to be celebrating 25 years in the City of Leawood! We remain committed to our loyal guests, team members, and the community of Leawood as a locally and women-owned and operated business.”
Town Center Plaza officials couldn’t be reached immediately Thursday for comment.
The Perry family opened their first location in Houston in 1979 — a modest meat market that they called Perry’s Butcher Shop (still operating as Perry & Sons Market & Grille). In 1986, they added tables and chairs for dine-in and they soon expanded with more locations.
They opened the first Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille in 1993 in Houston and the company now has 20 locations in seven states, including Chicago, Denver and Nashville.
Perry’s Leawood restaurant will be designed in partnership with Aria Group Architects Inc. in the Chicago area.
It will have an expansive main dining room and views of the open kitchen (behind glass) and Perry’s Bar 79 (79 after the year it was founded) through a towering wine wall. Perry’s has a large selection of wines including a private reserve.
It will seat 350 people and have four private dining rooms. The bar will have glass walls opening to the patio seating 45 people.
Each piece of meat is butchered in-house and cut to order — filet mignon, prime New York strip, prime rib-eye and more. Other menu items include braised beef short ribs, spaghetti squash primavera, crusted ahi tuna, crispy skin wild red snapper, salads and salads, a seven-finger-high pork chop, 17 different sides from corn brulee to cauliflower au gratin, and seasonal cheesecake.
Hours will be 4 to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays; 4 to 10 p.m. Saturdays; and from 4 to 9 p.m. Sundays.
Friday is the only day it is open for lunch — featuring a “lunch” portion of its massive dinner pork shop, mashed potatoes and house-made apple sauce for $17. Perry’s Famous Pork Chop Friday Lunch has become a cult favorite with each restaurant serving 700 to 800 of the specials every Friday.
It also ships its signature items nationwide.
Perry’s said Leawood will be its “first Kansas City-area location.” Are more in the works? The company said there were no plans to share at this time.
