Kansas City’s Stockyards Brewing Co. is looking to expand to Johnson County

Stockyards Brewing Co. in Kansas City’s West Bottoms wants to open in Overland Park.

It is going through the city’s planning process to take a space at 10310 Mastin St. A hearing for a “special use permit” for a brewery and taproom was scheduled for Nov. 8.

Greg Bland, owner/founder and “trail boss,” has been looking in the Crossroads and in Parkville, but recent changes to Kansas liquor laws opened up opportunities on the Kansas side, including the removal of residency requirements.

“We can be a Missouri business that has locations in Kansas now,” he said. “We are going down the road to see what is possible in Overland Park.”

The 25,000-square-foot space would be updated with areas for the brewery, taproom and kitchen, patio, offices and storage.

Bland liked the potential for craft beer growth in Johnson County, the location right off the highway for quick access from surrounding cities and downtown, and the neighborhood.

Last November, Johnson County voters overwhelmingly repealed a state liquor-by-the-drink law, which required businesses that serve alcohol to generate 30% of their sales from food, a difficult task for many bars.

In 2016, Stockyards Brewing took part of the former GoldenOx space at 1600 Genessee St., Suite 100. It currently produces nearly 1,000 barrels a year. Its most popular beer is a Mexican-style lager, Cerveza Royale.

But it needs to expand its production since it also will have a taproom at the new $1.5 billion terminal at Kansas City International Airport, expected to open in March 2023.
