Entertainment complex planned for Johnson County: Pickleball, beer, coffee shop & more
A new entertainment complex in a park-like setting is in the works for northern Overland Park.
Kansas City’s Launch Development Inc. previously opened the Promontory apartments, with 290 units, at 90th Street and Metcalf Avenue.
Now it wants to put up two buildings at 91st Street and Metcalf — a 14,520-square-foot recreation building for six pickleball courts and a 5,185-square-foot dining area with a bar.
Seven shipping containers will have food operators, retail shops, a bar, a coffee kiosk (perhaps with a drive-thru), restrooms and storage. Servers will take orders, pick up the food at the shipping containers and bring it to customers in the dining room.
Plans also call for two outdoor pickleball courts with a seating area, a stage for live music and other events, and multiple large screen TVs.
Launch is currently going through city planning. It hopes to start construction this fall, and SERV (which stands for sports entertainment recreation venue) would then open in fall 2022.
Two other pickleball entertainment complexes were already in the works for southern Overland Park.
Chicken N Pickle plans an October opening for a new location in Prairiefire at 135th Street and Nall Avenue. The indoor/outdoor complex will have a fast-casual restaurant, pickleball courts, large rooftop bar, stages for live performances, lawn games, indoor games and a sports bar.
Pickle Bar + Kitchen also planned a location at 135th and Switzer Road. It called for pickleball courts, a game lounge, pool tables and other games, but the fall 2020 scheduled opening was pushed back during the pandemic. Now Jeremy Alpert, managing partner, said he may reconsider that location.
“It doesn’t look like we will be doing it in OP if Promontory is going to have a location. We will look to other areas in KC or places outside of the KC area,” he said in a statement Wednesday.
Chicken N Pickle opened its first area location in North Kansas City in 2018. Now 54th Street Restaurant & Drafthouse is planning a fall debut at Zona Rosa, featuring a 10,000-square-foot outdoor courtyard with two pickleball courts.
