Andy’s Frozen Custard expands its plans for Waldo but faces a hurdle from the city
Waldo has been abuzz since news broke that an Andy’s Frozen Custard was coming to the area.
As one Facebook fan put it, “I have said for YEARS that Waldo needs an Andy’s location!!”
Not only that, Andy’s is tearing down a former Berbiglia Wine & Spirits building at 79th Street and Wornall Road that has sat empty since 2015. They plan to put up a shiny new building with drive-thru, walk-up windows and some outdoor seating.
It is scheduled to open this summer.
But now those plans have expanded a bit.
According to city planning, Andy’s wants to tear down the red ranch-style house at 7841 Washington St. Its Waldo site would then stretch from Wornall to Washington along 79th.
Zach Nelson, a planner for the city, said the staff will recommend that proposal be denied because the use does not comply with the area plan recommendation of low-density residential.
A City Planning Commission hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.
In a statement, Andy’s Frozen Custard said: “Andy’s has worked hard at community outreach and developed a plan that we believe enhances the area for local residents and businesses. We hope the City Planning Commission agrees and supports our efforts.”
Andy’s ice cream and frozen custard are both made with milk, cream and sugar, but its frozen custard gets its smooth texture with one additional ingredient: egg yolk.
Andy’s entered the Kansas City metro with a Westport location in 2015. It now has area locations in Blue Springs, Lee’s Summit, the Liberty area, Overland Park, Shawnee and south Kansas City.
It also plans to open in Overland Park’s Prairiefire and in Independence this summer.
