HGTV star Tamara Day’s ‘Diamond in the Rough’ becomes a JoCo home furnishings store

Most DIY fans know Tamara Day as the home renovator on the HGTV hit show “Bargain Mansions.” But what’s really been her dream for many years — owning a retail store — is about to become a reality.

“I’m really looking forward to everybody coming out and seeing what we’ve done here, getting a taste of what you’ve seen on ‘Bargain Mansions’ in real life,” Day said.

“I picked (the name) Growing Days Home because my last name is Day, I have four kids that I’m ‘growing’ and we have a lovely home,” said Day, who grew up in Salina and lives in Leawood. “And I want you to be able to take home a piece of the things that I love.”

As she was busy setting up displays and tablescapes, Day added that she carefully selected all of the items in the new 2,500-square-foot retail space.

In addition to selling furniture, home furnishings, art, lighting, rugs and accessories, Growing Days Home will offer a full-service design team, e-design and online shopping. “We have everything in every price point, from $5 to $5,000. We have something for truly everyone.

“Just like on ‘Bargain Mansions,’ I wanted to find a diamond in the rough and I think I found the perfect spot in Prairie Village in the Meadowbrook shopping strip, because this was definitely on the rough side when we took it over,” Day said. After months of renovations to the space, Day and the staff at Growing Days Home are preparing for Saturday’s grand opening.

“We’ve definitely polished it up,” Day said.

Day and her father, Ward Schraeder, a popular fixture on “Bargain Mansions,” will be at the grand opening of Growing Days Home from 2 to 7 p.m. on Saturday. The store, at 5324 W. 95th St., will have regular hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturdays in December.

When asked about the possibility for a season three of “Bargain Mansions,” Day said with a smile, “Follow me on Instagram for the news.”
