Sylvester Stallone was set to star in ‘Kansas City.’ But now the series is moving away
We got all excited back in December, when “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan announced an upcoming scripted series not just set in Kansas City but called “Kansas City.”
Sylvester Stallone would star as a mafia boss named Sal who relocates from New York to KC. There, the show’s creators said, he’d be “faced with the startling task of reestablishing his Italian mafia family to the modernized, straight-shooting town of Kansas City.”
Bad news: “Kansas City” is no more. They’ve moved the plot to Oklahoma.
According to Variety, “Kansas City” has been reimagined as “Tulsa King.” Stallone is no longer Sal, but instead Dwight “The General” Manfredi, a mob boss released from prison after 25 years and “unceremoniously exiled by his boss to set up shop in Tulsa, Okla.”
No word on why Sheridan, showrunner Terence Winter (of “Boardwalk Empire” fame) and the other executive producers decided to move things south.
Could be wardrobe — more people wear cowboy hats and chaps down there.
Or maybe the boom-and-bust cycle of life in oily Oklahoma lends itself better to story lines.
Perhaps the similarly named hit “Tiger King,” which come to think of it is also set in Oklahoma, had something to do with the decision?
We will have to wait and see. Variety reports that the show is scheduled to hit Paramount Plus in the fall.
Regardless, if past shows are any indication, few if any scenes would have been filmed in Kansas City, or Tulsa.
