Sylvester Stallone, local resident? He’ll play one in new TV series ‘Kansas City’
Here’s a lot of good KC entertainment news in one very long sentence:
Sylvester Stallone is set to star as a mafia leader who relocates to Kansas City in a new scripted TV drama series from “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan and “Boardwalk Empire” creator Terence Winter.
According to Deadline, which broke the news Monday, “Kansas City” is set in the present day and follows Sal (Stallone), a New York mobster who moves to KC, where he is “faced with the startling task of reestablishing his Italian mafia family to the modernized, straight-shooting town of Kansas City. There, Sal encounters surprising and unsuspecting characters who follow him along his unconventional path to power.”
The show will eventually air on Paramount Plus, home to “Yellowstone” and its upcoming prequel “1883,” which debuts later this month.
Shooting on “Kansas City” hasn’t started, and there’s no word yet if any scenes will be filmed in the city that gives the show its name. Few TV shows and movies set in Kansas City were actually filmed here, as producers seek better financial incentives elsewhere.
The recent fourth season of “Fargo,” for example, which depicted the mafia in 1950s Kansas City, was shot in Chicago. Neither Kansas nor Missouri currently have programs that provide financial incentives to movie and television production teams, although Kansas City does offer some through the Kansas City Film Office.
Stallone, 75, is best known for starring in the “Rocky” and “Rambo” franchises. “Kansas City” marks the first time he has played a leading role in a television series. We’re honored, Sly!
