Cardi B’s aura shines bright in sold-out Kansas City concert, fans say

Seven years after performing in Kansas City in support of her Grammy-winning debut album “Invasion of Privacy,” Cardi B brought high-energy, dazzling costumes and some drama in her return while dealing with an illness.

The New York-born rapper, reality television star and personality sold out the T-Mobile Center on Tuesday, March 17, on her Little Miss Drama Tour, marking the 18th consecutive sellout of her tour in support of her sophomore album, “AM I THE DRAMA?” The star took the sold-out crowd on a six-act journey, channeling emotions of hatred, love and ruthless aggression throughout two hours of nonstop action.

Cardi treated Kansas City to 37 songs, spanning across album cuts, singles, remixes and guest verses she had on other artists’ songs. Most songs had backup dancers to add to the glamor and take the load off her movement; she gave birth to her fourth child less than six months ago.

At one point during the show, she joked with fans, saying that she can’t breathe after all the dancing and singing after the first hour, asking for someone to bring her an oxygen tank.

What she lacked in mobility, she more than made up for in her commanding stage presence. She carried an undeniable aura with every step, mostly felt as she stared down the camera and into the eyes of the thousands in the building.

The realness she brings with her is one reason why KC native Precious Marshall enjoys Cardi .

“Cardi B is so down to earth, and I like how she is so humble,” Marshall said. “She never forgets where she came from, and I can truly appreciate that.”

Cardi presents new and old hits throughout the night

The show began at 9:17 p.m., when the arena lights went off, and on the screen appeared images of crows flying around, referring to the cover and the theme of her latest studio release. There’s a reason she went with crows, and it’s because they’re known for holding grudges.

Cardi appeared on stage donning a blonde wig and a long sparkling black and red robe, and immediately went into verses from “Hello,” “Magnet,” “Salute” and “Check Please,” songs off the newest album that not only brag about herself, but also contain disses toward other rappers.

“I’m on one today, b----, no adderall. But I’m gonna cool it down, it’s a long f------ show,” she said to the crowd, letting fans know right away that there’s no holding back at a Cardi B concert.

Each section came with a wardrobe change and highlighted a different trait of hers. The sensitive side, featuring her being trapped inside a bird cage, came out as she sang some of her slower songs, like “Be Careful” and “Ring.”

Homages to her Dominican and Trinidadian roots were proudly on display in an act featuring snippets of Latin-infused songs like “I Like It,” “Taki Taki” and “Bodega Baddie.” This part of the show also saw her dancers bring out Latin and South American flags to celebrate the culture, a planned spot that means more to her and her fans now, not long after Cardi criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security to kick off her tour.

Her sensual side came to play not too long after, although some would say that was present throughout the entirety of the show. A carousel was brought on stage, where Cardi and the dancers performed on the poles.

Lyrics in fan-favorite songs that she performed near the end of the show like “WAP,” “No Limit” and “Up,” leave little to the imagination, and she awarded one fan $2,000 for winning a dance contest as voted on by the fans in the arena.

Fans of all ages and backgrounds were on their feet for the majority of the show, doing their best to hype up the star who set time aside to shout out fans who traveled from areas like St. Louis or Omaha, Nebraska, to be here.

Outfit checks at the Cardi B show

It was back-to-school time for Cardi fans, as the dress theme for her concert was centered around drama school. For the most part, the fans came correct, with many busting out the varsity jackets and plaid skirts in harsh weather conditions.

One mother-daughter pair, Lori and Chelsea Walker, didn’t follow the exact dress code, but they still managed to show out, with Chelsea wearing a head-to-toe faux fur outfit, while Lori went with a faux fur jacket to go with her black jumpsuit.

The Kansas City residents are concert buddies, having gone to see artists like Kendrick Lamar and Taylor Swift perform. The two were excited about the Cardi B concert, referring to themselves as “Cardi stans,” and have been fans from hert G days as a reality TV star.

“I follow her on all social media. She’s just a down-to-earth girl,” Lori Walker said. “A mommy, she loves her kids, and she loves her fans. It’s all about her fans.”

Chelsea Walker recognized the importance of someone like Cardi, who uses her voice to speak out on issues affecting her fans. Though Cardi didn’t mention ICE during her Kansas City stop, Chelsea acknowledged Cardi ’s efforts throughout her tour.

“She is an Afro-Latina woman, she understands what our community is going through,” Chelsea Walker said. “I think that’s very important to have an artist use their platform, and be able to utilize it in a way to understand that we need to make a difference.”
