Who needs haunted houses? Here are 5 real haunts you can experience in KC

If the manufactured scares of the haunted houses in the West Bottoms and elsewhere aren’t your thing, there are ways to experience genuine spookiness in the Kansas City area during the Halloween season.

The region is filled with locations purported to be haunted, from the Folly Theater to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, and several offer public glimpses into their paranormal existence with tours, investigations and more.

Here are five venues with upcoming experiences that might help you get in the mood for Halloween.

Elms Hotel & Spa

The hotel has been said to host several spirits, and was once featured on “Ghost Hunters.”

John Wornall House Museum

The John Wornall House, which was used as a field hospital for both Union and Confederate forces after the Battle of Westport in 1864, has some dark tales to tell.

The historic home was deeply enmeshed in the violence of the Civil War, even serving as a field hospital.

1859 Marshal’s Home and Jail

You can see where criminals were once imprisoned and jailers live at the site in Independence.

Alexander Majors House and Barn

Ghost stories have long swirled around the antebellum house, and visitors can explore the history behind it.

Belvoir Winery

The Belvoir Winery in Liberty served as an orphanage and a retirement home for members of the Odd Fellows fraternal order. It now conducts paranormal investigations that the public can attend.

Once home to orphans and aging members of a secret society, the winery now offers history buffs and ghost hunters alike a chance to investigate.
