Chappell Roan receives something in KC she’s never had before: A Labubu
Here is the answer to “what do you give someone who has everything,” if that person happens to be Chappell Roan.
Wearing her hair pinned up in a hairnet before her first concert in Kansas City on Friday night, the Missouri-born pop star met with a group of fans and fellow performers backstage at the National WWI Museum and Memorial.
A TikTok that had been seen nearly 12,000 times by Saturday night identified the givers as the local drag queens chosen to perform before Roan’s opening acts. Seen in the video in costume are Minti Varieties and KiYanna Uchawi, who opened for Roan on Friday.
They handed her a tiny box.
It was a Labubu, one of the creepy-looking, fuzzy little stuffed animals that have become highly collectible and so popular that shoppers fought over them in a London store and some have sold for more than $10,000.
In August, Vogue described how fashionistas and celebrities are affixing Labubus to their expensive Birkins and Chanel bags. The fashion bible noted that Lady Gaga was spied in August “with a custom Labubu adorning her sleek black Kelly bag.”
“I don’t even have” one, Roan told her fans when they handed her the box.
“Hold on, let me get this on video. Unboxing!” said one.
“Oh so then you don’t know what it is,” Roan said.
Labubus have names, and some people announce which one they want from those pictured on the box before they open the mystery package.
Roan looked at the box and chose, “Luck ... but what I think it’s going to be ... I think it’s going to be Happiness.”
In Labubu world, Happiness is a cheerful, peach-colored plushie.
Lo!
Roan got Happiness.
So did more than 60,000 people who watched her perform in Kansas City.
