Here’s your first look at Eric Stonestreet as a killer in ‘Dexter: Resurrection’
Just hours after he helped raise millions of dollars for sick children at Children’s Mercy, hamming it up at Kauffman Stadium and T-Mobile Center, we get to see Eric Stonestreet’s weird dark side.
As the former “Modern Family” star co-hosted the Big Slick Celebrity Weekend, the trailer for the “Dexter” sequel series, “Dexter: Resurrection,” debuted, offering fans their biggest peek yet at the show.
As Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) meets new character Leon Prater (Peter Dinklage), a mysterious billionaire in New York City, Dexter says, “you really like serial killers.”
“I pride myself on finding the best of the best in every field,” Prater confirms.
Cut to a quick flash of those “best in the field” killers. Neil Patrick Harris. Krysten Ritter. David Dastmalchian, who was also at Big Slick over the weekend. And Stonestreet, who plays a character named Al with reported Midwestern roots.
Stonestreet looks like a science teacher from a bad high school movie — nerdy glasses, greasy hair, striped pullover. The nod of his head and tight grin seem so Kansas friendly, but Dexter fans know better..
The sequel takes Dexter to New York City and introduces new characters, including Dinklage and Uma Thurman, who plays Prater’s head of security, Charley.
“It turns out that Dexter Morgan is not alone in his proclivities. In fact, when he lands in New York City, he finds himself among an Avengers-style gathering of serial killers, and decides to lean into his dark passenger,” writes The Hollywood Reporter.
Stonestreet is best-known for his Emmy-winning role as Cameron Tucker on ABC’s hit comedy series, “Modern Family,” which ended in 2020 after 11 seasons.
Most recently, he starred as Mad Santa on the Disney+ series, “The Santa Clauses,” and earned a fourth Emmy nomination.
He is slated for a “high-profile guest arc” over four episodes of the “Dexter” series. It’s not the first time he’s played creepy. (Insert clown joke here.) In the first season of “American Horror Story” he played a psych patient.
Dastmalchian (“The Dark Knight,” “Dune,” “Blade Runner 2049”) shares Kansas roots with K-State grad Stonestreet. He was born in Pennsylvania but grew up in Overland Park where he graduated from Shawnee Mission South in 1994.
Two Big Slick supporters will get to attend the “Dexter: Resurrection” red carpet premiere next month thanks to an auction prize from Stonestreet. They’ll walk the red carpet and have a private meet-and-greet with him.
The series debuts with two episodes on July 11 on Paramount+. with Showtime.
If you’ve never seen “Dexter,” the entire original series and the 10-episode sequel, “Dexter: New Blood,” are streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime and other streaming services.
