Buying the wrong CIA prep course?

That’s a $1,000 mistake—and weeks of your life you won’t get back.

Whether you’re chasing a promotion, switching careers, or just trying to pass before your brain melts, the right course makes all the difference.

I tested the most popular CIA review courses, compared them to actual exam content, and sifted through student feedback to figure out which ones are actually worth your time and money. This guide breaks it all down—by study style, budget, features, and more—so you can find your best-fit course without second-guessing your decision.

Best for Live Learners: PRC

How I Tested These CIA Prep Courses

To write this guide, I personally spent time inside each of the top CIA review courses listed here. My goal was to evaluate not just what features they claim to offer, but how they perform for real students preparing for the exam.

Here’s what I did:

  • Logged into and navigated the student dashboards of Becker, Gleim, Surgent, and PRC
  • Completed 100+ practice questions per course to evaluate difficulty, clarity, and exam similarity
  • Took full-length simulated exams (where offered) to assess score prediction tools and adaptive tech
  • Compared content formats: digital vs. physical textbooks, video lectures, and mobile-friendliness
  • Measured support responsiveness through live chat and email with actual course questions
  • Cross-referenced all content against the updated 2025 CIA exam syllabus for accuracy

My goal: help you understand how these courses really work—so you can make the most informed decision based on your goals, learning style, and budget. Now, let’s get into the courses!

1. Becker: Best Overall

Becker’s brand new, fresh-from-the-oven CIA review course released on March 27th. They let me get an early preview of their course, officially titled “Becker—The IIA CIA® Exam Review” for this review, and I’m so glad they did.

The biggest selling point is twofold:

  1. Becker is arguably the best prep course provider for accounting and finance careers (with stats like 94% pass rates and Becker students accounting for 90% of Elijah Watts Sells Award winners since 2007)
  2. The Institute of Internal Auditors (the creators of the CIA exam) chose Becker to co-create and distribute the only IIA-endorsed CIA prep course

Put plainly, IIA’s hand in the project shows. I compared about 50 practice questions to questions from past CIA exams and found them nearly identical. And then, you have Becker, the exam prep juggernaut. I felt their influence the most in the user-friendliness and structure of the course.

Everything is so clean, straightforward, and easy to follow. I studied as a CPA, not a CIA, but I found the written materials easy to follow.

Further, Becker’s Adapt2U Technology was a welcome tool in my hypothetical test prep journey. I could not only test what I’d immediately learned, filtering practice questions by topic and section, but also monitor my progress and identify my weak points. Becker then helps you strengthen those tricky topics by enforcing spaced repetition techniques.

Pros

  • Created in partnership with the IIA
  • Streamline study with adaptive tech and a custom study plan
  • Private community for quicker responses and a sense of camaraderie
  • Affordable price compared to competitors like Gleim
  • Becker has a great reputation, and reviews are overwhelmingly positive

Cons

  • No pass guarantee

Bottom Line: Why Choose Becker CIA?

I chose Becker as the best overall course due to its IIA collaboration, fluff-free materials, and structured, straightforward plan. Prep courses can quickly become overwhelming, but Becker and the IIA give you everything you need to pass—and not a single unnecessary resource, which could distract you from your studies. If you’re the kind of student who wants a guided process and the faith that, if you follow it and put in the work, you’ll pass, Becker is an exceptional choice.

2. Gleim: Best for Comprehensive Prep

Gleim’s claim to fame is their massive library of exam-quality CPA practice questions. However, these questions tend to be more challenging than the real thing, because Gleim is the choice for “overpreparation.”

That means all of the in-depth material deep-dives your completionist heart could ever dream of, leaving no stone unturned. The goal is that, come exam day, you’ll breeze through because you know it all (and then some).

That same strategy extends to their CIA review course, which offers 3,000+ MCQs, physical and digital textbook options, unlimited practice exams, up to six mock exams, 45+ video and audio lecture hours, personal counselors, a Q&A hotline with internal auditing experts, and so much more. The latest addition? Over 230 new video walkthroughs that guide you through the logic and structure of practice questions—an excellent tool for reinforcing test-taking strategy.

The questions are maybe 20–25% trickier than those on the real thing, when I compared around 50 of them to past CIA exam questions. Part of it is that they’re longer, but I found they’re more likely to test you on something really obscure that you may have covered once in your studies. Personally, I appreciated this—knowing if I took the real thing, I wouldn’t be caught off guard.

However, I can see students getting (understandably!) upset to get a bad score on a practice test because too many questions were on topics that wouldn’t even be on the exam. Those low scores can lower your confidence, so this is only a good fit for truly resilient students.

While I think Becker is the best option, primarily due to the sheer quality of their IIA-approved materials, Gleim adds a 100% money-back pass guarantee and access until you pass to their Premium System, which, while being the most expensive on the list, is worth it for many students.

It’s clear that, as Gleim’s arguably been the most popular choice for CIA prep since 1980 (just take a look through some forums to gauge public opinion), it’s a really solid choice if you want something time-tested and proven to work, with tons of materials and in-depth coverage of CIA syllabus topics.

Reviews

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“I have Gleim premium. Gleim’s formatting and content are VERY similar to the exam’s wording and formatting. I highly recommend starting there. On the exam, I was pleasantly surprised at the brevity of the exam questions.”

u/Guagliodorione

“Gleim seemed to have a lot of unimportant info.”

u/Negative_Passion_865

Bottom Line: Why Choose Gleim CIA?

Gleim CIA is an excellent choice for students who are ready to put in as much work as it takes not just to pass the CIA exam but to ace it. You’ll have to endure some stressful practice tests and keep your head high when you score poorly, knowing that you’ll probably get a score boost on exam day. While it can be overwhelming and expensive, if you want the course with a proven track record, a pass guarantee, and access until you pass, Gleim is worth some serious consideration.

3. Surgent: Best Value

Let’s say you buy a big, beautiful, 4k resolution smart TV for $500. You plug it in, and it doesn’t work. Most stores have a policy where you can either return it for a refund or get an exchange for one that works without any added cost.

And yet, if you buy a prep course, go through the materials, and spend dozens (and maybe even hundreds) of hours studying, if you fail? It’s on you. Sorry, you’re out of luck.

That’s one of the reasons why I really respect Surgent. Every course I’ve seen from them has three key stats: a pass guarantee, a strong pass rate, and what percent of your study time you’ll reduce by using Surgent versus the average competitor.

For the Surgent CIA Review Essentials, that’s a 100% money-back pass guarantee, a 96% pass rate, and a 73% study time reduction, all for just $499 at the time of writing.

However, while Surgent is a superb choice for students looking to pass the CIA exam on a budget, you won’t have nearly as enriching an experience as you would with Becker or Gleim. Don’t get me wrong, Surgent works. The questions were pretty similar to those from past exams, other than the wording and tone feeling a bit more… wordy, for lack of a better description. Definitely trickier and less straightforward than the real thing, but I thought that was actually a positive.

That being said, I can only read an eBook on internal auditing for so long before I want to watch a video, listen to an audio lesson while I do my laundry, or… let’s face it, anything else. It gets repetitive and tedious quick, so if you’re not great at deep focus and note-taking, I’d look for a provider with bite-sized videos and a lot of intentional “monotony-breaking activities” like Gleim, which had a more enjoyable cycle of learn, do, practice, refine, repeat, rather than hours of drudgery and no breaks.

Pros

  • Pricing is currently less than that of competitors like Gleim and Becker
  • Straightforward, minimalist approach for better focus
  • 100% money-back pass guarantee for reliability and peace of mind
  • ReadySCORE is helpful and a great motivator for improvement

Cons

  • The trade-off for affordability is getting just the “bare bones” of CIA exam prep
  • No video lessons, which is a big no-no for auditory and visual learners

Reviews

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“Used a surrogate for both CPA and CIA and passed all parts the first time. My readyscore and actuals were plus or minus 2 points on all four parts of the CPA.”

u/Sellum

“I tried to use Surgent (which was a game changer when I took Part 2) … it was horrible for Part 3. The questions were all over the place and often didn’t align with the material, so I just stopped using it – would not recommend for Part 3.”

u/SouthernCharm-86

Bottom Line: Why Choose Surgent CIA?

Surgent does a lot of things right, and they’re a great fit for students who are pretty notoriously strapped for cash (been there, my friend!). They’re priced several hundred dollars lower than their closest competitors, have a money-back pass guarantee, and offer a quick, focused, and simple path to pass the CIA exams. However, if you want a more enriching experience, particularly regarding audio and video lessons or personalized support, look to alternatives like Becker and Gleim.

4. PRC: Best for Live Learners

And now, for the folks who want that good old-fashioned learning experience (or, about as close as you’ll get with an online course, anyway). Sometimes, just reading or watching a video isn’t enough. I mean, you have questions: what does that word mean? Why is that law that way? And that added context helps you maintain interest and create those neural pathways so you actually remember what you learned.

PRC has a lot to offer: 70+ hours of live online classes, 3,500+ practice questions, a money-back pass guarantee, unlimited practice exams, virtual flashcards, and 1-on-1 support. That’s why it’s on the list. But the reason why it’s in fourth instead of first, second, or third has much to do with user experience and reviews, and how that translates to trust.

I can tell you the materials look good after comparing them to the real thing, but I haven’t studied for and taken the CIA exam. So, I have to rely a lot on current students, and they have very little to say—probably because there are so few.

Becker, Gleim, and Surgent have helped millions of exam candidates pass, whereas PRC reports 25,000. My hypothesis is, for one, maybe there’s a low marketing budget, but for two, PRC isn’t exciting.

Becker is the direct partner and collaborator of the IIA. Gleim is known as the “go-to” in the CIA space, if forums are anything to go by. And Surgent helps you pass faster thanks to innovative technology. Meanwhile, I didn’t even realize PRC had live classes until I got the course because they barely mention it as a feature, even though it’s the main selling point.

And, though the course got revamped for the new CIA exam syllabus for 2025, it’s that same lack of passion and outdated feel that places PRC lower on this list.

Key Features

  • 🖥️ 70+ Hours of Live Online Classes available through any smart device
  • 📘 Physical and Digital Textbook for your format of choice
  • 3,500+ Multiple-Choice Practice Questions, making it the biggest test bank on the list
  • 🔁 Unlimited Practice Exams with a new mix of questions every attempt
  • 🎥 Video Lectures available without audio lecture counterparts
  • 🧑‍🏫 Personalized Support for exam topic and registration questions
  • 🧠 Virtual Flashcards designed for handheld devices
  • 🛡️ Money-Back Pass Guarantee for a full refund if you don’t pass the CIA exam (Premium only)

PRC

4.1

Pros

  • Live online classes for a reasonable price; cheaper than some on-demand-only providers
  • Largest question bank of the providers on the list
  • 100% money-back pass guarantee to add trust and reduce financial stress
  • Mobile-friendly materials for fitting study into your busy schedule

Cons

  • Updated for 2025, but not directly approved by the IIA, so accuracy is a crapshoot
  • Premium is the same price as Becker, the #1 choice on the list
  • Access is short: 18 months compared to Becker’s 24 months or Gleim’s access until you pass

Reviews

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“I found the PRC notes to be far more helpful and easier to understand compared to the IIA book. The PRC notes provided clearer explanations. I studied for around 6-8 hours/day for about three weeks and was able to pass Part 1 successfully.”

u/Aurumlea

“I passed the 1st and 3rd part on the first try as they were extremely easy! The second one tho… The first time I used PRC material, I ended up getting 574. The second time, I used PRC as well and ended up getting 575.”

u/Jeji122

Bottom Line: Why Choose PRC CIA?

PRC offers live courses, and while they can feel a little tedious, students who learn best in a more traditional environment could be a great match for PRC programs. Even though the materials were updated, the stale disinterest in the textbooks and videos keeps me from moving them up the list. However, with those live classes, an affordable price point, a money-back pass guarantee, and the largest question bank on the list, PRC has rightfully earned its place in the top five.
