Best CIA Prep Courses and Study Materials

Updated November 2, 2026

Choosing the wrong CIA prep course can cost you a lot of money and weeks of study time you won’t get back.

The Certified Internal Auditor exam has three parts, each built on The IIA’s syllabus, and the review courses take very different routes through it. Some drill you with harder-than-exam questions, some trim the plan to what you do not know yet, and one leans on instructors.

I spent time inside each course below, compared its questions with The IIA’s sample exam questions and scored every provider the same way, so you can pick the one that fits how you study.

Built With The IIA

Becker’s CIA review was developed with The Institute of Internal Auditors, the organization that writes the exam, and you feel it as soon as you start practicing. I compared about 50 Becker questions with The IIA’s sample exam questions and found them nearly identical in wording and structure.

Everything is clean and easy to follow. I studied as a CPA, not a CIA, and still found the written materials straightforward. Adapt2U let me filter practice questions by part and topic, flagged my weak points, and brought those topics back with spaced repetition.

Newt, Becker’s built-in AI assistant, made that loop feel complete. When I missed a question on the internal audit mandate, I asked Newt to explain it in simple terms without leaving the question, and it works the same way in textbook passages, flashcards and the mobile app.

The concept videos are short, with slides marked up on screen, and the SkillBuilder videos walk through how to solve individual questions. The course gives you everything you need to pass and nothing that distracts from it.

Strengths
  • ✅ Developed with The IIA, with practice questions that read like the real exam
  • ✅ Adapt2U builds a study plan and brings weak topics back with spaced repetition
  • ✅ Newt AI answers questions in practice, textbooks, flashcards and the app
  • ✅ Unlimited access and a pass guarantee on Premium and Pro
Watch out for
  • ❌ Essentials caps access at 24 months and drops the pass guarantee
  • ❌ LiveOnline classes come only with Pro, and printed textbooks only with Premium and Pro
  • ❌ Questions sit at exam level, so overpreparers may want Gleim’s harder bank
  • ❌ A newer CIA course with less long-term student feedback than Gleim

Skip it if: you want the hardest possible practice questions, or you only need a bare-bones course at the lowest price.

Against the field

Against Gleim, Becker is the cleaner platform with questions closer to the real exam and an AI assistant, while Gleim has more lecture hours, harder questions and counselor support. Against Surgent, Becker adds videos, a community and Newt; Surgent costs far less and suits candidates happy to study from e-books.

Bottom line: Becker is my top overall pick for its IIA collaboration, fluff-free materials and structured plan. If you want a guided process and the confidence that following it will get you through, Becker is an exceptional choice.

Harder Questions and a Personal Counselor

Gleim built its CIA course for candidates who would rather overprepare than be surprised. When I compared around 50 of its questions with The IIA’s sample exam questions, they ran about 20 to 25 percent trickier: longer, and more likely to test an obscure point you covered once.

Personally, I appreciated that, knowing the real exam would not catch me off guard. Every study unit follows the same loop: a short video lecture, multiple-choice walkthrough videos that show the reasoning behind a question, an outline to read and a set of focus questions.

SmartAdapt updated my recommendations after each exercise, and the study planner laid out my weeks around blackout dates. Personal counselors help you set up that plan and keep you on it, and internal audit experts answer content questions.

The trade-off is volume. You will sit some stressful practice tests and score lower than you would like, and the sheer amount of material can feel overwhelming if you want a fast, simple path.

Strengths
  • ✅ Questions that run harder than the exam, so test day feels easier
  • ✅ 45+ hours of video lectures with matching audio lectures
  • ✅ Personal counselors plus internal audit experts for content questions
  • ✅ Access Until You Pass and a money-back guarantee on Premium
Watch out for
  • ❌ The most expensive full course of the four
  • ❌ Can be overwhelming for students who want a fast, simple approach
  • ❌ Tough practice scores can be discouraging mid-study
  • ❌ Access Until You Pass and the guarantee are tied to the Premium tier

Skip it if: you want the shortest path to exam day, or harder-than-exam practice scores would knock your confidence.

Against the field

Gleim is the mastery library here: more lecture hours and harder questions than Becker, with the counselor support none of the others match. Becker beats it on exam-like questions and the Newt assistant; Surgent beats it on price and speed.

Bottom line: Gleim is an excellent choice if you are ready to put in as much work as it takes not just to pass the CIA exam but to ace it. If you want a proven course, a pass guarantee and access until you pass, it deserves serious consideration.

An Assessment That Trims the Plan

Surgent is the lean option. Its course starts with an assessment quiz that maps what you already know, then builds the study plan around the gaps, and ReadySCORE tells you when your results look strong enough to pass.

When I worked through its questions, they tracked The IIA’s sample exam questions closely, though the wording ran wordier and a little trickier, which I counted as a positive. The Daily Surge dashboard made the next task obvious every time I logged in.

Surgent also backs the course with a pass guarantee, which is still not standard in exam prep. You buy a course, spend hundreds of hours with it, and if you fail, most providers leave that on you.

The trade-off is the experience. The course leans on e-books rather than a lecture series, and I could only read about internal auditing for so long before I wanted a video or an audio lesson. If you need variety to stay focused, Gleim’s learn, practice, refine cycle is more enjoyable.

Strengths
  • ✅ The lowest price for a full three-part course in this ranking
  • ✅ An assessment quiz that builds the plan around what you do not know
  • ✅ ReadySCORE shows exam readiness and is a real motivator
  • ✅ Pass guarantee on the only package
Watch out for
  • ❌ No lecture series, which is a big drawback for visual and auditory learners
  • ❌ E-book study gets repetitive without breaks in format
  • ❌ Access ends after 18 months
  • ❌ No counselors or study community

Skip it if: you learn best from videos or audio lessons, or you want personal support while you study.

Against the field

Surgent is the efficiency pick. Against Becker and Gleim it costs far less and gets you to a readiness score faster, but gives up the lectures, the counselors and the community. Against PRC it is the more modern, data-driven platform with less instructor contact.

Bottom line: Surgent does a lot right for candidates on a tight budget: a pass guarantee and a quick, focused path to the CIA exam. If you want videos, audio or personal support, look to Becker or Gleim.

Instructor-Led Lessons on Exam Technique

PRC, from Powers Resources Corporation, suits candidates who learn best by asking questions and hearing an instructor explain why something works. Its lectures cover exam technique as well as content, which can make a real difference in what sticks.

The course has been updated for the current CIA syllabus, and while the platform feels old-school next to Becker or Gleim, that is not necessarily a bad thing. Candidates who value instructor contact over flashy technology get something many competitors do not offer.

PRC sells Standard and Premium bundles, or one part at a time. Video lectures, the printed textbook and the success guarantee come with Premium, while Standard covers the question bank, mock exams, eBook and flashcards.

There is surprisingly little online discussion about PRC, likely because it is a smaller provider with a low marketing profile. Its instructor sessions are easy to overlook on its site, even though they are arguably the course’s biggest strength.

Strengths
  • ✅ Instructor-led lectures that teach exam technique alongside content
  • ✅ A large question bank with mock exams in both bundles
  • ✅ Sold as full bundles or one part at a time
  • ✅ Success guarantee on the Premium bundle
Watch out for
  • ❌ The platform feels dated next to Becker and Gleim
  • ❌ Video lectures are an add-on unless you buy Premium
  • ❌ 18 months of access, short of Becker’s unlimited access on Premium
  • ❌ Little independent student feedback online, and no coupon through this site

Skip it if: you want a modern adaptive platform, an AI assistant or the deepest pool of student reviews.

Against the field

PRC is the instructor-first option. Becker and Gleim offer far more polished platforms and stronger support, and Becker Pro adds LiveOnline classes of its own. Surgent costs less but has no lectures at all. PRC wins when instructor contact matters more than technology.

Bottom line: Students who learn best in a traditional environment could be a great match for PRC. The dated textbooks and videos keep it off the top of the list, but its instructors, question bank and Premium guarantee earn it a place.

How I Tested and Scored Each CIA Course

Use the chapter list to jump to any part of the method. Each chapter opens on click so you can read only what matters to you.

What a CIA review course has to deliver

The CIA exam has three parts built on The IIA’s exam syllabus. A course earns its price by teaching that material clearly and drilling it with questions that look like the real exam.

The question is not which course has the most features. It is which one gets you through all three parts with the fewest wasted hours.

Each provider was scored on the same four categories by the same reviewer; the star rating in the table is their average.

Dashboard and study planning

I logged into each student dashboard, set an exam date and watched what the planner did after a weak practice set.

Becker’s Adapt2U and Gleim’s SmartAdapt both reshaped the next session around my misses. Surgent’s assessment quiz built the plan before I studied anything. PRC’s platform tracks progress but feels old-school.

Questions, lectures and exam match

I worked more than 100 practice questions per course and compared about 50 from each bank with The IIA’s sample exam questions for wording, difficulty and topic coverage.

Becker’s questions came closest to the real exam. Gleim’s ran about 20 to 25 percent trickier, and Surgent’s were wordier. Lectures earned points for teaching rather than reading slides.

Value for the money

I weighed what each package includes, how long access lasts, whether a pass guarantee is attached and how much coupons typically save.

Unlimited access with a guarantee scores higher than a package that expires after 18 months, and a low price only scores well when the course still covers the full syllabus.

Support, coaching and community

I sent real course questions through live chat and email and noted the reply time and who answered.

Gleim’s personal counselors and internal audit experts set the bar. Becker adds unlimited learning support and a private Facebook group. A help desk that only handles login problems does not count.

FAQs

How much does the CIA exam cost?

The IIA charges a $120 application fee for members ($240 for non-members), then $310 for Part 1 and $280 each for Parts 2 and 3 ($445 and $415 for non-members). Its certification pricing page notes these fees change on January 4, 2027.

What is the best CIA review course?

Becker is the best CIA review course for most candidates: its content was built with The IIA, its questions read like the real exam, and Newt answers questions mid-session. Gleim, Surgent and PRC each win for a specific study style.

Is the CIA certification worth it?

For most internal auditors, yes. It is the globally recognized internal audit credential, and the CIA salary data shows a clear earnings lift for certified auditors.

Which part of the CIA exam is hardest?

Most candidates find Part 3 the toughest because it covers the broadest range of business topics. The IIA publishes official pass rates for each part.

Is Gleim enough to pass the CIA exam on its own?

Yes, especially the Premium course. It is thorough and designed to overprepare you, with harder-than-exam questions, mock exams and counselor support.

How should I prepare for the CIA exam?

Choose a review course, set a study schedule you can keep, practice consistently and track your weak areas. The CIA exam guide covers each part and how it is scored.

Does a CIA prep course need a pass guarantee?

It helps if you are an anxious test-taker. Becker Premium and Pro, Gleim Premium and Surgent all carry a guarantee, and PRC offers one on its Premium bundle with terms attached.

Is the CIA certification related to the Central Intelligence Agency?

No. Here CIA means Certified Internal Auditor, a credential from The IIA. If you were looking for the agency, its careers page is a separate site.
