Eric Hosmer got a nice gift for Padres coach who gave him jersey No. 30
By now, Royals fans are well-aware about Eric Hosmer wearing No. 30 for the Padres in memory of the late Yordano Ventura.
Hosmer wanted No. 35, but it has been retired by the Padres. San Diego coach Glenn Hoffman had No. 30, but he gave it up to Hosmer after he signed an eight-year, $144 million contract.
According to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, Hosmer gave Hoffman a Rolex watch at the Padres' spring-training camp.
"Like I said to Hoffy, it was extremely meaningful for me,'' Hosmer told Crasnick. "So I wanted to get a nice gesture for him. It's an unwritten rule throughout the league that if a veteran guy comes and asks for a number and somebody has it, you do something like that for him.''
Hosmer added that a "friend in Kansas City'' helped pick out the gift.
In his first news conference with the Padres, Hosmer said about getting the No. 30: "It meant a lot to me."
