Fishing report for June 30

Missouri

SMITHVILLE: 87 degrees, clear, near normal. Outlook: Burton’s Bait and Tackle reports: Bass good to excellent on Brush Hogs, square-bill crankbaits, topwater lures in shallows off main-lake points and in river arms; crappies fair on minnows in the main-lake brush; channel catfish good on dip baits in 3 to 4 feet of water and on trotlines with panfish, goldfish; white bass good on small crankbaits, jigging spoons off main-lake points; walleyes very good on lipless crankbaits off main-lake points.

TRUMAN: 86 degrees, clear, 1 foot high. Outlook: Cody’s Guide Service reports: hybrids good on jigging spoons 15 feet down in 20 to 40 feet of water along channel edges, points and humps; white bass excellent on spoons, Rooster Tails, jigs; catfish good on shad on the flats in 6 to 15 feet of water. Below the dam: catfish fair on live shad; crappies poor to fair.

STOCKTON: 85 degrees, clear, normal, 1 foot high. Outlook: Stockton Lake Guide Service reports: Walleyes good on bottom bouncers in 16 to 18 feet of water on the flats; crappies fair to good on minnows in 15 to 18 feet of water in brush; bass fair on jigs, plastic worms in the brush piles; catfish very good on minnows, shad in brush.

TABLE ROCK: 86 degrees, very clear, near normal. Outlook: White River Lodge reports: Black bass good on Dixie Jet spoons in 25 to 45 feet of water along bluff ends and long points; catfish excellent on juglines with sunfish in timbered coves.

BLUE SPRINGS: Mid 80s, fairly clear, near normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: Channel catfish good to very good on liver, live bait, stink baits off points, in coves and along dam; bluegills very good on crickets, redworms in shallow, rocky areas; crappies fair on minnows early and late off docks.

JACOMO: 84 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: Channel catfish good on live bait, dough baits near dropoffs; bluegills good on crickets; flathead catfish very good on rod and reel with live bait in the coves and on the shallow flats at night and in the evening; crappies fair on minnows; hybrids fair on liver.

NORFORK: 86 degrees, clear, near normal. Outlook: Bink’s Guide Service reports: Stripers good on white Bink’s Spoons in 40 to 60 feet of water; walleyes good on one-half ounce Bink’s Spoons in 30 feet of water on the bottom.

LONGVIEW: 83 degrees, 36-inch clarity, normal. Outlook: Longview Marina reports: Bluegills good on crickets, redworms in the shallows; flathead catfish fair to good on nightcrawlers trolled near the swim beach; walleyes fair on bottom bouncers trolled on the main lake; crappies fair (but small).

LAKE OF THE OZARKS: 85 degrees, clear, 1  1/2 feet low. Outlook: Gier’s Bass Pro reports: Crappies fair trolling crankbaits or jigs in brush; bass fair on large crankbaits off points when there is current and on 10-inch plastic worms in the brush.

REED AREA: 82 degrees, clear, full pool. Outlook: Department of Conservation reports: Bass fair on soft-plastic baits near cover; channel catfish fair on cut bait, chicken liver; bluegills, redear sunfish good on worms and small jigs.

BULL SHOALS: Upper 80s, clear, normal. Outlook: Buck Creek Marina reports: Crappies fair on jigs, minnows in 25 feet of water along bluffs; walleyes fair trolling crankbaits on the flats; bass good on crawdads, grubs in 35 feet of water in brush; catfish fair to good.

POMME DE TERRE: 84 degrees, clear, near normal. Outlook: Muskie Guide Service reports: Bass fair to good on jig and pig, plastic baits on the ledges; walleyes fair trolling crankbaits, live bait in 6 to 12 feet of water on flats; catfish good on a variety of baits on the flats.

TANEYCOMO: Clear, 3 units running from midday to 8 p.m. Outlook: Lilleys’ Landing reports: Below Fall Creek: trout good on white jigs, air-inflated nightcrawlers, Trout Magnets early. Trophy Area: trout good on Size 14 to 18 midges and on San Juan worms.

Kansas

POMONA: 78 degrees, murky, 2 feet high. Outlook: Lighthouse Marina reports: Crappies fair on jigs in 15 to 20 feet of water in brush; white bass good on Rooster Tails, jigs where fish are surfacing; walleyes good trolling crankbaits, nightcrawlers in 10 to 15 feet of water on the flats; catfish good on a variety of baits.

CLINTON: Mid 80s, clearing, 1 foot high. Outlook: Don and Tom’s Bait and Tackle reports: Crappies fair to good on jigs in main-lake brush; walleyes fair to good on jigs with nightcrawler off points; white bass, wipers good where fish are chasing shad early and late.

WILSON: Mid 80s clear, 5 1/2 feet low. Outlook: Knothead’s Bait and Tackle reports: Stripers good on spoons in deep water; walleyes fair to good on nightcrawler harnesses on flats; smallmouth bass good on plastic baits, jigs in coves; catfish fair to good on a variety of baits.

MILFORD: Mid 80s, clear, near normal. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: Wipers good on topwater lures, Bubbas early and late from Farnum Creek to the dam; catfish good lakewide.

EL DORADO: Low 80s, clearing , one-half foot high. Outlook: Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism reports: White bass, wipers fair on Rat-L-Traps, crankbaits, jigs along windy points; crappies fair to good on channel edges near timber; walleyes fair to good on jigs, nightcrawler harnesses in 3 to 15 feet of water; catfish fair to good lakewide.

WYANDOTTE: 84 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Wyandotte Boats reports: Catfish good at night on liver, nightcrawlers along the banks; bass good early and late on plastic baits; hybrids fair trolling crankbaits; bluegills good on crickets, redworms in the shallows.

PERRY: Mid 80s, clearing, 1 foot high. Outlook: Don and Tom’s Bait and Tackle reports: Catfish fair to good drifting shad or fishing with Sonny’s Dip Bait at Devil’s Gap.

GLEN ELDER: Mid 80s, clear, near normal. Outlook: Wayne’s Sporting Goods reports: Walleyes poor to fair trolling; white bass fair on small topwater lures, crankbaits, jigging spoons where surfacing on calm mid afternoons; catfish poor to fair on chum holes.

HILLSDALE: Mid 80s, clearing, near normal. Outlook: Jayhawk Marina reports: Catfish fair on hot dogs off the docks; crappies poor to fair (small ones are being caught).

MELVERN: 84 degrees, clearing, slightly high. Outlook: Melvern Lake Marina reports: crappies fair on minnows along face of the dam and in rocky areas; walleyes fair (but small) on nightcrawlers, minnows; catfish good along dam and in outlet.

COFFEY COUNTY: Upper 80s midlake, clear, normal. Outlook: Coffey County reports: Smallmouth bass fair to good.

KILL CREEK: 88 degrees, murky, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Recreation District reports: Bass fair on plastic baits early; catfish fair on dough baits, liver in the evening; crappies fair on minnows, spinners early.

SHAWNEE MISSION: 86 degrees, murky, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Recreation District reports: Bass fair on plastic baits in shallows; catfish fair on dough baits, worms on island; crappies fair on minnows in deep water; panfish fair on worms.

TUTTLE CREEK: Mid 80s, muddy, normal. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: Catfish very good on a variety of baits lakewide.

LaCYGNE: Upper 80s, clear, normal. Outlook: Linn County Parks reports: All species poor.

Brent’s best bet

The hot weather hasn’t killed fish’s appetites at Smithville Lake. The bass are still shallow, and they’re hitting. White bass, walleyes and catfish also are being caught.
