Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith struggled against a stout Panthers defense on Sunday. He completed 25 of 38 for 178 yards with no touchdowns and an interception for a quarterback rating of 65.5. That’s Smith’s worst in a game since recording a 59.3 against the Broncos in the second week last season.

But Smith came up with a solid read and throw on a play that doesn’t count in the final statistics.

Smith’s pass to Travis Kelce on a two-point conversion after Eric Berry’s 42-yard interception return for a touchdown closed the Chiefs’ deficit to 17-14 early in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs went on to a 20-17 triumph.

Tight ends Travis Kelce and Demetrius Harris crossed, with Kelce going outside. Smith put it on the numbers, and Kelce held the ball out over the goal before stepping in.

“Hats off to those two,” Smith said. “There was a two-man game over there. Those two worked on that timing, so I just let them do and they did their thing.”
