You knew it was coming, but the Chiefs made it official on Friday, announcing quarterback Alex Smith and running back Spencer Ware are out for Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Blows to the head in last week’s 30-14 victory at Indianapolis shelved the Chiefs’ starting quarterback and running back. Smith didn’t have a concussion, according to the team, and is being held out as a precautionary measure. Ware was diagnosed with a concussion.

Additionally, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said running back Jamaal Charles, who is on injured reserve, had the meniscus in his right knee trimmed earlier this week. Asked if Charles could return to play this season, Reid said he unsure.

“I haven’t even gotten that far,” Reid said. “I can’t tell you that.”

Others who won’t play on Sunday, according to Reid, are cornerback D.J. White, because of a hand injury, and guard Parker Ehinger, who is out for the season because of a torn ACL.

Wide receiver Jeremy Maclin and defensive lineman Jaye Howard are listed as questionable.

The Jaguars list defensive end Jared Odrick out and cornerback Aaron Colvin as questionable.
