Jordan Barnett won't play in Mizzou's NCAA Tournament opener following DWI arrest
Missouri forward Jordan Barnett will not play in the Tigers' NCAA Tournament opener Friday against Florida State following his early Saturday morning DWI arrest.
"He's suspended as we speak," Mizzou coach Cuonzo Martin said Sunday. "He won't play Friday."
Barnett can travel and practice with the team and Martin said it's possible Barnett could play in the second round if the Tigers advance.
Without Barnett, the Tigers' second-leading scorer, Mizzou has seven available scholarship players.
Barnett was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated by University of Missouri police around 3 Saturday morning, MUPD Maj. Brian Weimer said.
According to police, Barnett was stopped at the corner of Stadium Boulevard and Ashland Road and was later released on his signature promising to appear in municipal court. According to the Missouri student-athlete handbook, "consequences for driving under the influence" are a minimum one-week suspension for a first offense.
“This is still a celebratory moment for us," junior forward Kevin Puryear said. "... I’m still super proud to be his teammate. That’s our brother. Regardless of, you know, the mistakes that he’s made, we’re always going to be by his side.
"Everybody makes mistakes. I guess all you can do from there is just learn from them. I still think this is a great moment for him, a great moment for our team. He’s been a great contributor all season — left it all out there on the floor. He’s done a lot for this university and this team. That’s really my stance on all that.”
