The Jackson County Circuit Court has scheduled a hearing in September for people to weigh in on a proposal to extend the Kansas City streetcar south of downtown.

The court will hold a public hearing on the question of creating and funding a proposed streetcar taxing district. The hearing is set for 9 a.m. Sept. 15.

Written responsive pleadings supporting or opposing the proposal are due to the court in early August. That deadline for responses will be set soon.

A petition was filed in court by 50 transit supporters last week, calling for extending the downtown streetcar line south on Main Street to 51st Street and Brookside Boulevard. It would also expand the downtown streetcar taxing district and seek a 1-cent sales tax increase and new property tax assessments to help pay the local portion of the streetcar cost.
