Lawrence police said Tuesday that an arrest warrant has been issued for a man who allegedly abandoned a baby in a trash receptacle earlier this month.

Marquis Jamall Young, 27, is facing charges of attempted first-degree murder and child abuse in Douglas County District Court, according to police.

Young was arrested over the weekend in Lenexa and was charged Monday in Johnson County District Court with domestic battery, according to court records.

Police said Young was the stepfather of the 9-month-old girl who was found abandoned early on the morning of July 7 at an apartment complex in the 2500 block of West Sixth Street in Lawrence.

The baby spent almost two weeks in the hospital before she was released into state custody. Police said said she is continuing to receive outpatient treatment.

Police said there was no evidence that anyone else was involved in the incident.

Young also was charged with domestic battery earlier this year in Douglas County, according to court records.

He pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charge and was placed on probation. As a condition of probation, he was required to take anger control classes and complete a Veterans Affairs program concerning post-traumatic stress disorder, according to the records.

He also has a prior conviction for aggravated battery and was released from prison last summer, according to Kansas Department of Corrections records.
